"Terrier" is the first book in Tamora Pierce's Beka Cooper trilogy, published in 2006 and set in the Tortall universe roughly two hundred years before the Song of the Lioness quartet. Sixteen-year-old Beka Cooper becomes a "Puppy" — a trainee — assigned to a pair of "Dogs," as the Provost's Guards are called. Working the murky streets of Tortall's Lower City, Beka uses police training, her own quiet courage, and a touch of magic to investigate the murder of an infant whose death no one in power seems willing to take seriously.

Pierce wrote the trilogy as the journal of an early ancestor of George Cooper, the rogue from the Alanna books, and the diary format gives Beka a distinctive narrative voice. The Provost's Guard reads like a recognizable modern police procedural transplanted into a medieval fantasy world — beat patrols, snitches, evidence boards, and the friction between street-level officers and the people they serve.
