The LAMEST HORSE SOMETIMES WINS: coming of age

Sometimes the darkest horse does win and the most loved disappears. The Los Angeles "white trash" town of Santa Rosa is a tight knit community of broke, broken down, but often brilliant people who keep out of the way and closely together. Many of the kids are in and/or just graduating high school and have fallen into their generations-long family tradition of just getting by. Those in Dr L's tuition-free summer classes for twelve handpicked brilliant kids determined to and capable of getting beyond the dirt boundaries of town have made it to Ivy League universities, into incredible work situations, and otherwise beaten the odds thanks to their own determination. The kids here aren't coming of age on a straight line of nice homes and paid educations; some don't even have food on their own tables. But the special ones in Santa Rosa think beyond what they're told or expected to do, they make their own decisions and come of age on their own terms. It's About the End, Not the Journey
