About the Author

Annie Besant

Annie Besant was a British social reformer, women's rights advocate, orator, and theosophical writer whose remarkable public career spanned secularist activism, labor organizing, esoteric philosophy, and the Indian independence movement. Born in 1847 in London, she rose to early prominence through her work with Charles Bradlaugh and the National Secular Society, including the landmark 1877 obscenity trial over the republication of a birth-control pamphlet by Charles Knowlton. In the 1880s Besant played a central role in the London match-girls' strike of 1888, helping to organize the young women workers at the Bryant and May factory in a successful campaign for better conditions — a touchstone moment in British labor history. She served on the London School Board and produced a steady stream of pamphlets, lectures, and books on socialism, women's suffrage, and free thought. Her intellectual life took a decisive turn in 1889 when she encountered the work of Helena Blavatsky and joined the Theosophical Society, eventually rising to lead the international organization from 1907 until her death in 1933. From this period date her many theosophical works, including Theosophy and the New Psychology, in which she attempted to reconcile theosophical metaphysics with the emerging psychological sciences of the early twentieth century. She moved to India in 1893 and became one of the most prominent European voices in the Indian independence movement, founding the Home Rule League in 1916 and serving as president of the Indian National Congress in 1917. Her life work brought together strands of nineteenth-century reformist thought — secularism, socialism, feminism, anti-imperialism, and esoteric religion — that few other public figures of her century attempted to hold together in a single biography.
